FORESTS OF THE FOREST DISTRICT

The area of the Forest District Sława Śląska is characterised by diversified relief and distinguishes with interesting forms of its natural topography, shaped by sheet of the quaternary depositions connected with receding the glacial. It is located in the province of the Central – European Plain.

The area of the Forest District presents the lowland character of the area, however its relief is diversified. In the northern and western parts, the plain of the river sands is varied with moraines of dunes, reaching up to 90 meters over the sea level. Its middle and northern west part is characterised by occurrence of lakes belt, with the biggest Sławskie Lake (817 ha). From the southern side of the lakes belt, there appear the area of end moraines and kames (post-glacial hill). The highest hill of this region is Stara Winna Góra (130 meters over the sea level). On the south and west behind the moraines, there spreads quite plain area of sandour sands.

The area of the Forest District Sława Śląska is located within the range of climatic region on the strip of plains called Kraina Wielkich Dolin (the Land of Great Valleys, characterised with temperate climate with fairly slight rainfalls and slight diversity of temperatures), inits western part, on the border with climatic region of mountains valleys and basins (with the longest in Poland vegetation period).

In the Forest District, there were distinguished 46 subtypes of soils. The largest share is for rusty soils, constituting over 65% of forest area. From the remaining types of soils, the largest area is covered with podsols – about 18% of the forest cover area.

The area of the Forest District Sława Śląska is located within the range of natural occurrence: Scots pine, European oak and Cornish oak, black alder and European ash.

The Forest District lies in the area of direct watershed of the River Odra and its tributary Obrzyca , as well as the watershed  of the River Warta and its tributary Obra.

Taking into account its climate, it is located within the range of climatic region of  Kraina Wielkich Dolin (the Land of Great Valleys), in its western part on the border with climatic region of mountains valleys and basins.

The territorial range of the Forest District Sława Śląska equals 25.704,70 ha. It characterises with the great forestation, reaching 50,8%.

With the increase of  forest sites fertility, there also increases the share of deciduous tree species. Pine as overstocked tree stand species covering over 93% of the area in the whole Forest District. The second species within mentioned area is black alder with its areal share of 2%.

Despite of wood, vegetation of the forest ecosystem also constitutes of shrubs and plants of groundcover. The most important species existing in the forest groundcover of the Forest District are the following: mosses, blackberries and grasses. Large sod formation of soil occurs particularly in cultivations and grounds without any forests.

Within the area of the Forest District Sława Śląska, there are species taken under partial protection, among others: cup lichen (cladonia), Iceland moss, lesser perwinkle, common ivy, and species under strict protection, such as: wolf's-foot clubmoss, Iceland moss, common fern and  common snowdrop.

Animals' world within the areas of the Forest District  is as rich as plants' world is. Inhabiting the area, protected bird species are represented by,  among others: common pheasant, white – tailed eagle, black stork, Eurasian collared dove, common kingfisher. Besides, within the area of the Forest District, there are many other animal species of different classes.
